DHS body camera rollout incomplete six months after pledge, agents in two fatal shootings had none

DHS pledged in January 2026 to quickly deploy body cameras for immigration officers nationwide after agents killed two U.S. citizens in Minneapolis. As of July 16, 2026, the rollout remains incomplete. Officers in two fatal shootings in early July — in Texas and Maine — were not wearing them, DHS said. DHS blamed government shutdowns for delays and declined to disclose how many cameras it has. Congress provided $20 million for body-worn cameras but could not agree on a mandate.
