Councils left to plan for climate adaptation without funding answers

The Government has deferred decisions on how climate adaptation costs will be shared between central and local government until the next parliamentary term. Climate Change Minister Simon Watts said the Government was "simply not at that point." LGNZ says cost-sharing must be a priority, as some councils cannot afford adaptation alone. Opōtiki's mayor says his council "may not even survive."
