Canada tells U.S. there is no basis for forced-labour tariffs

Canada has filed a written submission with the U.S. Trade Representative arguing there is "no basis" for proposed 10 per cent duties on Canadian goods under Section 301 investigations into forced-labour enforcement. Ottawa points to its existing supply-chain transparency laws, a 2020 import ban on forced-labour goods, and Bill C-35—introduced last month to create product blacklists and shift compliance burden to importers. The submission precedes a three-day Washington hearing as USTR decides whether to impose tariffs on 60 countries.
