Meta's AI Watermark Won't Talk to Industry Standards, Fracturing Detection Efforts
Meta's Content Seal watermarking system cannot detect images watermarked by Google's SynthID or the C2PA standard backed by Adobe, Microsoft, and OpenAI. The incompatibility means provenance verification tools now operate in parallel rather than converging on a shared format. Meta's detector works only within its own ecosystem, limiting its utility for content moving across platforms Meta doesn't control. This divergence undermines the stated goal of cross-platform provenance tracking as AI-generated media spreads globally.
