Five-year survey puts Aldabra giant tortoise population at almost 183,000

Researchers estimate almost 183,000 adult and sub-adult Aldabra giant tortoises live on Aldabra Atoll in Seychelles, the largest-ever figure for the species. The Seychelles Islands Foundation and University of Exeter team analyzed counts from 2018 to 2022, published in Ecology and Evolution. It updates the late-1990s estimate of 100,000; numbers were relatively stable.
