Italy approves fully proportional voting system in 227-164 vote
Italy's Chamber of Deputies approved Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's electoral overhaul on 8 October 2026 by 227 to 164, replacing the hybrid system with fully proportional allocation. Meloni says it will produce clear winners and stable government; opponents say it favours her right-wing coalition ahead of elections due by October 2027.
