Italy switches to fully proportional voting system
Italy's Chamber of Deputies approved Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's plan to replace the hybrid voting system with fully proportional allocation on 8 October 2026, by 227 to 164. Proportional means seats match vote share. Meloni says this brings clear winners and stability; opponents say it helps her right-wing coalition before elections due by October 2027.
