Maricarmen, 87-year-old symbol of Spain's housing crisis, dies in Madrid

María del Carmen Abascal, known as Maricarmen, died October 7, 2026 at Hospital Gregorio Marañón in Madrid, the Sindicato de Inquilinas confirmed. The 87-year-old had lived in the same Madrid flat since 1955 before her eviction. Police tore down her door to remove her. She became a symbol of Spain's housing crisis.
