Justice Committee backs English as official language without changes

The Justice Select Committee has recommended the English Language Bill pass without amendments, clearing the way for Parliament to formally recognise English as an official language alongside te reo Māori and New Zealand Sign Language. English has never held formal status despite centuries of use in government and courts. The bill returns to the House for second reading after the 28 June recommendation.
