Bedford train accelerated to 76mph after passing red signal before fatal crash

Investigators say the Corby to Luton Airport Express passed a red danger signal near Elstow, then accelerated to 76mph before emergency braking slowed it to 49mph at impact on 19 June 2026. The collision with a stationary Nottingham-London train killed driver Shaun Burton and injured 160 people, the Rail Accident Investigation Branch reported.
