Germany commits to fossil-fuel phaseout by 2045 in first roadmap

Germany published a fossil-fuel phaseout roadmap on September 23, 2026, pledging for the first time to be "transitioning away" from fossil fuels by 2045, rather than only carbon neutrality. Berlin says the plan supports climate neutrality by 2045. It is the third major economy to publish such a roadmap, after France and the Netherlands.
