U.S. Urges Australia to Drop Plan for Algorithmic Content Suppression

The U.S. government urged Australia on September 22 to withdraw plans under the Online Safety Amendment (Digital Duty of Care) Bill 2026 that would require platforms to suppress content on safety grounds. Washington called the criteria ambiguous. Canberra proposed the bill to let users opt out of algorithmic feeds and says it sees no threat to U.S. ties.
