Greens push wealth tax in 2026 campaign — the first major party to do so
The Green Party released its 2026 election tax platform on 21 June, proposing a 2.5 percent annual levy on net assets exceeding $2 million — the first wealth tax proposal from a major New Zealand political party. The plan also includes a $10,000 tax-free income threshold and a guaranteed minimum income of $385 per week after tax. Neither major party has previously initiated a wealth tax debate, making the Greens' position materially distinct heading into the election.
