Carney welcomes proposal for Canada to become first EU associate member

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney told the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Sept. 17 that Canada welcomes Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's proposal for associate EU membership. The status does not yet exist and needs EU member-state approval. If created, Canada would be the first associate member.
