UK paying £56,000 for each person returned to France

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood told MPs each removal to France under the 'one in, one out' deal costs about £56,000. About 1,400 people have been sent back since August 2025 in exchange for asylum seekers arriving by legal routes. Mahmood said that is about the same as or cheaper than a year in hotel accommodation.
