Labour pledges independent AI regulator and Office of AI inside DPMC if elected

Labour leader Chris Hipkins and technology spokesperson Reuben Davidson announced the party would, if elected, establish an independent AI regulator sitting outside the Department of Internal Affairs, plus an Office of AI within the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet using existing resources. A senior minister would carry whole-of-government responsibility, with a public work programme. The announcement was made at Victoria University of Wellington on 9 September.
