Sudanese Army Repels RSF Assaults on Last Darfur Stronghold, Kills Sector Commander

In early August 2026, Sudan's army and allied former rebel groups repelled two successive RSF attacks on Bir Saliba, the paramilitary's last stronghold in West Darfur, roughly 30km north of el-Geneina. Government forces destroyed over 38 combat vehicles, seized 27, and killed the RSF sector commander. Thousands of civilians have fled renewed fighting near el-Geneina. An SLM/TC leader says the RSF has shifted from advancing to retreating.
