Researcher Releases Patterns That Evade Surveillance Cameras

At Def Con 2026 in Las Vegas, researcher Bill Swearingen demonstrated adversarial patterns — printed designs that confuse surveillance cameras and license plate readers into missing people, faces, and vehicles. The patterns disrupt object detection without blocking video recording itself. Swearingen ran roughly 31 million tests over a year and released the designs at norecognition.org.
