Council amalgamation deadline passes; non-participants face imposed restructuring

The 9 August deadline for councils to submit voluntary amalgamation plans has passed. Councils that didn't submit will face restructuring imposed by government officials. Submitted proposals will be assessed for realism and value to ratepayers. Final plans are expected in 2027, with changes taking effect at the 2028 local elections.
