Why a $100M Gold Bar Scam Targeting Seniors Is Nearly Untraceable
New York AG Letitia James says scammers stole over $100 million from 100-plus victims, mostly seniors. The scheme blends cyber and physical tactics: fraudsters use fake pop-ups to gain remote computer access, fabricate evidence of hacking, then pressure victims into buying gold bars handed to couriers posing as "authorities." Unlike bank transfers, physical gold is effectively irrecoverable. Similar cases have surfaced in five states.
