Government sells Chorus loans for $702m, keeps undisclosed risk backstop

The Government will net about $702m selling interest-free loans to Chorus — $60m above book value — settling August 2026. Infrastructure Minister Chris Bishop said Crown-owned NIFFCo gives investors "limited protection for unlikely risks," but the Government hasn't disclosed what that protection involves or what taxpayers could be exposed to. Proceeds were already in Budget 2026.
