Speaker declines to act on Peters' remark, citing free speech

Speaker Gerry Brownlee refused a Greens' request to make Winston Peters withdraw and apologise for telling Green MP Lawrence Xu-Nan to "go back to your own country." Brownlee said the request came too late and would not treat it as a breach of privilege (a breach of parliamentary rules), citing free speech. Peters has refused to apologise; PM Luxon called the remark racist.
