Endangered Pygmy Hippo Born at Toronto Zoo
A female pygmy hippo calf was born at the Toronto Zoo on August 5, 2026, to 20-year-old mother Kindia. The IUCN lists the species as endangered, with only 2,000–3,000 left in the wild. The calf stood within 15 minutes and nursed within 4.5 hours — early milestones curators track closely given known neonatal mortality risks in the species.
