UK tagging system gaps ahead of early prisoner releases

England and Wales' electronic tagging system cannot automatically flag when offenders enter exclusion zones, Inspector of Probation Martin Jones warned. Police and probation officers must manually check cases instead. The finding precedes a plan to release up to 5,000 prisoners early from October 2026 to relieve overcrowding — with killers and domestic abusers eligible.
