UK tracking tags can't automatically warn of rule-breaking before prisoner releases

Electronic ankle tags worn by offenders in England and Wales cannot automatically warn police when someone enters a banned area, Inspector of Probation Martin Jones warned. Officers must check by hand. Up to 5,000 prisoners could be released early from October 2026 to ease crowding — including killers and domestic abusers.
