Northumberland council debt climbs toward £900m

Northumberland County Council's debt reached £898.4m this April, up from £830.8m a year earlier. Independent councillor Patrick Lambert warned the audit committee that taxpayers may "pick up the pieces." Debt is rising by £4.5m monthly against a £1.6bn borrowing cap. The Conservative-run council said the spending was affordable.
