Your council owes nearly £900 million — who pays?

Northumberland County Council owes £898.4m, up from £830.8m last April. Independent councillor Patrick Lambert told the audit committee that residents may "pick up the pieces." Debt grows by £4.5m a month; the legal limit is £1.6bn. The Conservative council, which runs local services, said the borrowing was affordable.
