Saumos Wildfire in Southwest France Stabilized After Burning 42,000 Hectares

A mega-fire — a blaze too large and intense to suppress quickly — in Gironde, France, ignited July 22 and was declared stabilized July 30. The Saumos fire consumed 42,000 hectares (roughly 104,000 acres) and drew 2,700 firefighters. Flames reached within 15 km of Bordeaux. Two firefighters died battling a separate fire near Bordeaux-Mérignac airport the same day the Saumos fire began.
