Saumos Wildfire in Southwest France Stabilized After Burning 42,000 Hectares

A mega-fire in Gironde, France, first ignited on July 22, was declared stabilized as of July 30. The Saumos blaze consumed 42,000 hectares and drew 2,700 firefighters. Two firefighters died battling a separate fire near Bordeaux-Mérignac airport the same day the Saumos fire began. Flames had reached within 15 km of Bordeaux.
