Magnitude 7.1 Quake Devastates Kumamoto, Japan

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Kumamoto, Japan, on July 28, 2026, at a shallow depth of 10 km. At least 23 are dead. Over 100 aftershocks — smaller tremors following the main quake — have slowed rescue access. Three remain missing inside a partially collapsed Aeon mall, where an explosion occurred 50 minutes after the mainshock. PM Takaichi called it a "race against time."
