Powerful Earthquake Strikes Japan, Killing at Least 23

A powerful earthquake hit Kumamoto, Japan, on July 28, 2026. At least 23 people died. The quake shook the ground just six miles deep, making it especially intense. Over 100 smaller tremors followed, slowing rescue teams. Three people remain missing in a partly collapsed shopping mall, where an explosion happened 50 minutes later. Japan's leader called the rescue "a race against time."
