OpenAI Gives 100,000 Academic Researchers Free Access to Its Most Capable Model

OpenAI will grant 100,000 faculty and postdocs free access to GPT-5.6 Sol Pro, its most advanced model, through 2027 — starting with 10,000 this summer. Each researcher can invite four collaborators. The $250 million program defaults to not using participants' data for model training, a meaningful safeguard for unpublished work.
