OpenAI Will Give 100,000 University Researchers Free Access to Its Smartest AI

OpenAI will give 100,000 university researchers free use of its smartest AI system, GPT-5.6 Sol Pro. The $250 million program starts with 10,000 researchers this summer and grows through 2027. Each can invite four colleagues. Notably, the company will not use researchers' work to improve its AI — protecting unpublished studies.
