Newfoundland Begins $2 Million Cleanup of 110 Vats of Rotting Fish From Abandoned Plant
An Atlantic Seafood Sauce Company plant in St. Mary's, Newfoundland and Labrador, closed in 2001, leaving roughly 110 vats of decomposing fish inside. The stench kept children from playing outdoors. After a wall collapsed in high winds in January 2026, the first load was trucked away on July 28 under a $2 million provincial cleanup budget. An official said those responsible will likely never be held accountable.
