Newfoundland Starts Cleaning Up 110 Vats of Rotting Fish Left Behind at Old Plant

A seafood sauce plant in St. Mary's, Newfoundland and Labrador, closed in 2001, leaving about 110 large containers of rotting fish inside. The smell was so bad children couldn't play outside. In January 2026, strong winds caused a wall to collapse. On July 28, the first load was trucked away under a $2 million cleanup budget. An official said those responsible will likely never be held accountable.
