Wastewater networks overflowed 31 times a day last year, watchdog reports

Taumata Arowai — the water services regulator — recorded 11,535 wastewater overflows across Aotearoa in 2024/25, averaging 31 daily. Twenty-two percent of treatment plants held expired consents. The report covers 331 public networks serving 84 percent of the population.
