Sewage spilled into the environment 31 times a day last year, report finds

New Zealand's water watchdog, Taumata Arowai, counted 11,535 sewage overflows in 2024/25 — about 31 each day. Twenty-two percent of treatment plants were running without current legal permission. The report covers 331 public networks serving 84 percent of people.
