First Federal Case for Using a Duress PIN to Wipe a Phone at the Border

Federal prosecutors charged Atlanta resident Samuel Tunick after he gave CBP agents a passcode that triggered GrapheneOS's duress feature, wiping his phone during a secondary inspection at Hartsfield-Jackson airport on January 24, 2025. Charged under 18 U.S.C. § 2232, Tunick pleaded not guilty. The first hearing was held the week of July 23, 2026.
