First Federal Prosecution for Wiping a Phone at the U.S. Border

The Justice Department charged Atlanta resident Samuel Tunick after he gave border agents a passcode that erased his phone during an airport search on January 24, 2025. Some phones can be set up so a special password deletes everything. Charged under federal law, Tunick pleaded not guilty. His first hearing was held the week of July 23, 2026.
