Hungary's Ruling Party Reshapes Constitution: President Ousted, Judges Retired, Lawmakers Term-Limited

Hungary's Tisza party, wielding a two-thirds parliamentary supermajority (enough to amend the constitution unilaterally) after April's landslide over Viktor Orbán, passed an amendment on 18 July 2026. It ended President Sulyok's term immediately, imposed 12-year lawmaker term limits, and forced constitutional court president Péter Polt into retirement — all within three months of taking office.
