Hungary's New Government Rewrites Constitution to Remove President, Term-Limit Lawmakers, and Retire Top Judge

Hungary's Tisza party, holding a two-thirds parliamentary supermajority after April's election landslide over Viktor Orbán, passed a constitutional amendment on 18 July 2026 ending President Tamás Sulyok's term immediately. The amendment also imposes 12-year lawmaker term limits and forces constitutional court president Péter Polt into retirement — all within three months of Tisza taking office.
