Cuban Artist Otero Alcántara Missing Days After Prison Release

Cuban dissident artist Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara was reported missing on July 17, 2026 — one week after finishing a five-year prison sentence. His whereabouts were unknown since the day after his release. A habeas corpus petition (a legal demand to produce a detainee in court) followed on July 13. The U.S. Embassy in Cuba and Freedom House urged action. He had planned exile in Miami and filed a U.S. visa request.
