NOAA's GOES-19 Satellite Enters Safehold Mode, Disrupting Western Hemisphere Weather Data

NOAA's GOES-19, the operational GOES-East satellite for about 15 months, entered Safehold mode by July 15, 2026. Safehold is a protective standby state. The event interrupted full-disk imaging, rapid-scan severe weather monitoring, lightning mapping, and space weather instruments. OSPO confirmed engineers are working recovery and will share a timeline when available.
