Dickens's Swiss writing chalet, now too fragile for visitors, added to England's at-risk register
Charles Dickens's flat-packed Swiss chalet, a Christmas gift he worked in at Gad's Hill, is too fragile for visitors at Eastgate House in Rochester. Historic England added it to its Heritage at Risk Register on 5 November 2026, among 197 entries. The BBC reported in June that the chalet was set to receive a £240,000 lottery grant for restoration.
