Welfare spending forecast to reach £431bn by 2030, OBR says
The Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR), the government's independent forecaster, expects total welfare spending (state benefit payments) to rise from £334bn last year to £431bn by 2030. Its forecast has risen £8bn since March. About half of welfare goes to pensioners, and a quarter to sickness and disability benefits.
