Healey orders 1% capital cuts across departments to fill £4.7bn defence gap
Chancellor John Healey has told every government department to find 1% cuts to their capital budgets, the money for long-term spending on buildings and equipment. The savings would fill a £4.7bn gap in the Defence Investment Plan, the government's defence equipment plan. The cut applies from 2027-28. Defence is a reserved matter, decided at Westminster for the whole UK.
