Labour promises to ban no-cause evictions for renters

Labour leader Chris Hipkins announced in Christchurch on 28 October 2026 a renting policy that would ban no-cause evictions. Under the plan, landlords would need a valid reason to end a tenancy. A no-cause eviction is when a landlord removes a tenant without a reason and without warning. Labour said it would give tenants more notice if elected.
