Lead researcher says US-backed newborn hepatitis B vaccine trial in Guinea-Bissau will not go ahead

Frederik Schaltz-Buchholzer, the lead researcher, said on 21 October 2026 that a US-backed hepatitis B vaccine trial for newborns will not go ahead in Guinea-Bissau. He said the team did not receive the necessary government approval. Guinea-Bissau's government had said on 13 October that it had not approved the trial.
