Burnham asks ministers to examine scrapping gas standing charges
Prime Minister Andy Burnham has asked Chancellor John Healey and Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh to examine whether standing charges, fixed daily fees payable even with no energy used, can be removed from gas bills. They are to report to the Commons at the earliest opportunity. Electricity is not included; the PM's spokesman said VAT on electricity bills has been cut.
