Carney Appoints Conservative MP Martel to Senate as Independent

Prime Minister Mark Carney appointed Quebec Conservative MP Richard Martel to the Senate on Tuesday as an independent. Martel resigned immediately from the House of Commons to take the seat. This is the fifth Conservative to leave the caucus this Parliament. The appointment shows how prime ministerial appointment power can move opposition MPs away from electoral politics.
